We have a group name now! "Spider Lily Translations"

We spider lilies would like to thank everyone for your support, and we're extremely proud that everyone has been reading and enjoying Higanbana no Saku Yoru Ni - The First Night. Here's a brief preview for the 1.1 patch we're going to be releasing this week. The music room has been updated with romaji titles and information on the music files. This will make music easier to refer to among fellow English-speaking Higanbana fans.

  3. Stupid question, if we move from the 1.0 patch to 1.1 patch, will that hurt our saved files in any way? I know WH's releases had that issue, but I THINK that was only for the installer version.

    1. That's not a stupid question at all.

To be quite honest, I doubt you'd have problems, since the changes we're making aren't really the sort that would affect save files. If you want to be absolutely sure, however, I'd recommend reading to the end of your current chapter before upgrading. Then you'll be able to start the next chapter from the chapter select screen without having to worry about your save files not working.

  4. If you haven't already noticed, there's a translation mistake in the 2nd story. When camera bro is first interacting with Top Hat the line "When I my mind understood etc" shows up. I should be removed from it so its just "When my mind"

    1. I also noticed that during this scene (also chapter 2) that the zoomed in face image is on top of the text if you try to backlog http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/12/78160660.png/ not sure if this is intentional or fixable but another thing I thought I'd point out

    2. Thanks, I've updated the script so the typo will be fixed in future versions of the patch.

As for the enlarged sprites obscuring the backlog text… that's a known issue in the original Japanese game. While we've made attempts at fixing it ourselves, we were unable to figure out what was causing it. Of course, if we find a way of fixing it, we'll certainly update the patch to do that.

  5. Since you're going to release a new patch soon, I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm currently writing down every typo and weirdly phrased sentence I come across. Having just finished Chapter 2, I currently have ~60 of them (some of those are pretty minor though, like a missing quotation mark for example).

Considering the game's short length, I'll most likely be done with Higanbana this weekend. For that reason, it might be a good idea to postpone the new patch a bit if you were planning to release it before then.

    1. I'm not too sure when we'll release the next version of the patch, but we'll certainly incorporate any corrections sent to us in future versions, and we very much appreciate the efforts of those who do so.

    5. @ Yirba

To be honest, I was overall disappointed with The First Night. My biggest complaint with Higanbana would have to be the bullying, and considering how vital this particular theme is to the story, I guess you can imagine how much it affected my enjoyment of the game. More precisely, what I disliked wasn't the theme of bullying itself, but the way it was executed. In short, the bullying felt way too forced and exaggerated for my taste. I did feel bad for Marie in Chapter 1, but halfway through the game, the constant use of bullying as a plot device kinda grew on my nerves to the point where I simply didn't feel sympathy for the bullied kids anymore. Needless to say, the ending of Chapter 7 (or the whole chapter for that matter) was a big letdown for me because of this.

On the bright side, I did like Chapter 2, 6, and to some extent, Chapter 5 (butt rape ending is best ending :P). I also thought that the game had some pretty neat moments of suspense, as one would come to expect from a 07th Expansion title. Other than that, I found the music and pacing to be pretty good, the latter of which came as a pleasant surprise since good pacing isn't exactly something Ryukishi's stories are known for.

So yeah, quick question. Does Ryukishi explore more themes in The Second Night? Considering that Higanbana is divided into several chapters, each having a different protagonist, I thought it'd be interesting if he addressed a different problem for each one of them.

    6. Hmmm… While I personally don't have any problems with the way the theme of bullying is explored, it is something a number of people have criticised. I do think the bullying is somewhat exaggerated, though.

I'm not familiar with The Second Night yet, but I imagine the main theme is again bullying, and I don't expect anything too different from The First Night. Can't say for sure, though.

    7. Okay, I've fixed the script with most of your corrections. Again, many thanks for your help! :-)

    8. Darn it Yirba... you went and did all that even though I already did it and now conflicts everywhere. Bleh.

    9. Alrighty, taken care of! I pushed all the changes out. 1.1 should be ready. I'll go ahead and put up the English version as soon as I do a quick fly through without a save to make sure things are working. =)
