Higanbana Introduction Scene - English Translation Preview
This is an example scene from the current Chapter 1 translation where Marie first meets Higanbana. This is all still a work in progress of course. Thanks again for all the support everyone.
Hello. First and foremost, congratulations on your project. I speak on behalf of the 07th Inquisition Team, which translate Umineko to Spanish, and we would like to get in touch with you to speak about the Higanbana project. Please, send us a e-mail to magister-negi-magi@hotmail.com
Firstly, I'd like to thank you for translating this. I'm a really big fan of Ryukishi's work and I've been looking forward to his newest project.
Secondly, will you be releasing gradual patches throughout the translation process? As in, after each story. Seems that with each episode so neatly divided into multiple stories it presents a perfect way to release.
And lastly, I'd like to offer myself as an Editor/QCer. I'm an english major in college, and I've been looking for a good project for some time. I don't have any translation experience, but I've been editor for a school newspaper and newsletters and I'm confident in my abilities in this regard.
If you're interested, you can contact me at: alice.tertius@gmail.com
Well, if it so happens, I'd be glad to work with you!
I can understand the frustration in waiting. Currently I wouldn't be satisfied releasing an immediate story patch without some more underlying functionality finished (e.g. Glossary system and multi-platform functionality) but... I'll ask the team what they think and I'll get back to you.
Tsk... Ignoring my multiple requests to do QC and respond directly to someone who asks the first time. I ought to beat you within an inch of your life for that, ya know?
...Instead, I'll just congratulate you on reaching the 20% mark and once again offer to pay for some webhosting and a .com for the project. Keep up the good work (or else)
Hi! I'm from the 07th Inquisition (http://07thinquisition.foroactivo.com), the group that's translating Umineko no Naku Koro ni to spanish (and some other minor VNs). And I'd be intersted to talk to you. Send me a mail to: 07thinquisition@gmail.com
This is great. As for as translation goes, you guys are pretty fast. If you were to estimate how long this would take, what would your guess be as to when this is released? I won't hold the date aganist you, just curoius as to how long you think it'd take going at your current pace.
@Budmaster: Don't worry. Just because we haven't posted anything doesn't mean we're not hard at work on the translation. In fact, part of it has been translated just today! :-)
Hi! Just wanted to leave a comment to say that I'm really glad that Higanbana is being translated for English readers. Thank you for your hard work. I look forward to the finished product. :)
Fellow translator Sachibelle pointed out to me that the story seems to play out almost like a Japanese version of the twilight zone, and I agree. Each chapter being a tale of otherworldly encounters and one never quite knows what to expect -- or what will happen. But they've all been fairly short (by 07th Expansion standards) and satisfying thus far.
Personally, I have been translating as I read and I've mostly avoided spoilers. So I can't really compare it to Umineko yet as a finished work. But I find it rather enjoyable, despite staring at some screens and lines for incalculable periods of time trying to think of the best possible English equivalent for a particular phrase.
Happy new year Ronove, Yirba, Sachibelle, ClaymoreDorjey, Trollkastel and everyone involved in this project! thank you so much for all your hard work! I can't wait for the patch! >w<
Looks like my copy of Higanbana will arrive in time for the patch :P Awesome work guys. You considered doing the Higurashi visual novels when done with Higanbana? Sonozakifutagotachi seems to have disappeared.
I think he means a patch to the original Japanese version. But it's true that there isn't much point now that MangaGamer have released their version.
Of course, it would be nice to have a translation of Higurashi Rei. We haven't discussed what we'll do after Higanbana, and that's probably something we'll address once The Second Night is underway.
stnick5 tried to post the following, but the comments didn't seem to be working:
"Mangagamer's translation isn't very good, and they changed/edited some of the music and sprites. Plus I've already bought the original games."
To which I replied:
"Yeah, MangaGamer's release could have been a lot better. Still, I doubt anyone other than Sonozaki Futago-tachi would translate a game that's already been translated. At least, not while Higurashi Rei, Umineko Tsubasa and Umineko Hane haven't been translated yet."
Well, before they start with Higurashi I think they should continue with Higanbana (meaning Second Night and possible further VNs). Do you plan to translate the other "nights" too?
Does anyone know how many VNs are planned for Higanbana?
There is the issue that a Nintendo DS or PlayStation 2 patch would probably require illegal methods to be able to play them… It would be nice to have those translated, though.
I'm still willing to help. I'm soon to get the first and second games. Took me forever to find them.
But will you guys see this through? Importing these games is not cheap, and after what happened with the girls doing Higurashi... No one wants that again.
But yeah, I must echo what the person said above. It would be great if you guys could take over Higurashi. We still have no translation for Watanagahi-hen through Rei. Well, there is a patch for the one Rei story, but that's it. I was a beta-tester and editor for the original translation project, so I'd be more than willing to help you with that too. I have all three necessary games.
The translation of Higanbana: The First Night is nearly finished, and we're hoping to release the patch quite soon, after which we'll start work on The Second Night, which we might need some extra help with.
Hey...What happened to my reply to your comment? Did you delete it? I didn't think there was anything wrong with it... All it did was ask how you knew that and inform you that, if you still wanted my help, I'd be getting both games soon. I also know of a place that still has the First Night in stock.
We didn't get a reply… I know that some people have had problems with this blog's comment system for some reason, so there might have been a problem publishing the comment.
As for how I knew, I just saw the post on the AnimeSuki forums with the link to your project blog. :-)
Thanks for offering your help, I'll ask Ronove about it.
Will do. By the way, as both the places you have listed no longer have either Higanbana in stock, you might want to put down Mandarake. Their site is in English, and they still have copies of both Nights.

Thank you very much in advance ^^
any possibility of a beta patch soon?? I am wanting to see what this series is like.. And going in blind is how I like to do it.
ReplyDeleteEverything is looking awesome so far. You're doing a bang-up job! I did notice some small grammar and punctuation errors:
ReplyDelete03:32
but for Marie, the girl's nametag was obscured and she couldn't read it well.
10:01
I'll recommend it at our class meeting that you join us as the eighth rank (may want to remove 'it' unless it's aligned with the original text)
That aside, everything is just peachy. Keep up the good work!
Hard Working Ronove~
ReplyDeletehi, is there any chance you'll be releasing episodic patches (7 patches for 7 chapters) ?

ReplyDeleteIf we're lucky, it'll be out before the next Comiket. That is the target zone for release.
ReplyDeleteThat would be awesome! ;w; keep up the good work guys!
ReplyDeletegreat job. as a fellow ryukishi fan i am thankful for your dedication

ReplyDeleteA comiket release would be absolutely amazing.

ReplyDeleteSo what does the translation group think of the story? Good as Umineko?

@zimcub: Again, I can't compare Higanbana to Umineko as a complete work. However, I have found the story very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteHiganbana has quite a different feel to Umineko… Although they're both amazing, it's a different experience.
Happy new year Ronove, Yirba, Sachibelle, ClaymoreDorjey, Trollkastel and everyone involved in this project! thank you so much for all your hard work! I can't wait for the patch! >w<
ReplyDelete@Budmaster: Thank you!! Happy new year to you, too. Progress is going quite rapidly, so you shouldn't have too long to wait. :-)
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for this. Absolutely great work everyone and thank you for making this translation. :D
ReplyDelete"As of 1/6/11" Happy new year, guys! You should change that already. Btw you're all awesome, keep up the good work :D.
ReplyDeleteWow, how did I miss that! Thanks Ome =D
ReplyDeleteLooks like my copy of Higanbana will arrive in time for the patch :P Awesome work guys. You considered doing the Higurashi visual novels when done with Higanbana? Sonozakifutagotachi seems to have disappeared.
ReplyDeleteyou can read the MangaGamers version of Higurashi is 100% in english

I hear that another group has just started work on translating the rest of Higurashi. They've been looking for help, so you might also like to offer your help to them.
I'm not a member there anymore. Bad experiences.@_@ Are you a member? Do you see any sign of an IM account? I'd love to offer them my help.
